Aurora Photos Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Aug 2013
These are hand held photos I took with a Nikon D80 Camera in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in August, 2013.

All exposures were taken withoug a tripod, hand held by holding the camera as still as I could against a rigid object, electrical transformer, concrete picnic table, lamp post. Hence, there is varying degrees of camera motion that caused "star streaking" or apparent movement in the object. The street lights here "moved" way too much. To do it right I should have used a tripod, (I have several back home in Sedona) and a cable release, and the "hat trick" (holding a hat or card in front of the lens without touching it and moving it after firing the shutter, after the mirror in the camera stops vibrating.

Note that the increased detector speed (all previous shots were ISO 400, this is IS0 1600) over exposed the sky and brought out the clouds (the red, probably from a preponderance of red light reflected up from the ground). But I did get a 3rd band, which I did not know was there (or it just appeared)

Photo is hand held and captures a field of view of over 90 degrees. Since I was not expecting to see the Northern Lights, I did not bring a tripod.

I finally got smart and lowered the camera detector sensitivity to IS) 800 (twice the original ones but 1/2 the sensitivity of the "fast" ones at IS) 1600) This actually makes the most pleasing picture, although not as much of the aurora is brought out or recorded by the camera detector.

The aurora was fading by now, so
